Historiography revolves around events as these express important changepoints in reality. We postulate that events can play an important role in improving automated search and data integration in the historic domain as events connect information about who did what where and when.
We present a pattern based approach to automatically extract historical named events like "French Revolution" and "Second World War" from unstructured texts in Dutch. The extracted events are the backbone of a structured event thesaurus that will consist of events with their time, place and participants.
