Title Developing a knowledge-based system to integrate news-wire reports of events of Sociopolitical Violence, Health Threats and Natural Disasters in the Middle Eastern and Mediterranean areas.
Abstract I am currently involved in a research project led by the Cyprus University of Technology entitled “Predicting the impact of current events on the arrival of tourists”. The project aims in the development of a knowledge-based system to integrate reports from a wide variety of news-wire services, and to correlate the occurrence of such events to fluctuations in the arrivals of tourists to the affected areas. The talk will focus on the challenges faced in integrating the data from the various sources (Factiva, FBIS, BBC, Reuters), identifying duplicate reports, converting the data to RDF and developing an ontology to represent the data that is both expressive enough to support the analysis we intend to carry out in the future, and simple enough to be used by a community of researchers that are not familiar with Semantic Web technologies. I will also focus on the various issues that were considered in selecting appropriate components to implement the system in terms of both the back and front ends, and the rationale behind the final choices made. The talk will conclude with a short demo of the system in its current state, provided that internet access is available.
