Title The Web of Voices: how to connect 4.5 billion internet-less people to the Web, starting with 20.000 in Mali
Abstract The Web Alliance for Regreening in Africa project aims to bring the advantages of the Web to remote areas in Africa, making use of mobile telephony in combination with voice technology. One of the use cases in the VOICES project is about farmers in the Sahel that have two main sources for exchanging information: mobile telephony and community radio. Although seen as an outrageous idea for 4.5 billion people in the world, already progress has been made for around 20.000 in Mali. A voice browser system, called Radio-Marché, has been deployed and tested in Mali. This talk is about the design and experience with deploying the Radio-Marché system in Mali. Furthermore, research challenges for deploying web and voice technology in rural areas.
