Title Simulation-based Training of Aggression De-escalation
Abstract Employees in the public domain, such as police officers, bus drivers, and ambulance personnel, are regularly confronted with aggressive behaviour. To better prepare them for such confrontations, most educational programmes in these domains include dedicated aggression de-escalation training. However, this type of training is typically based on role play, which is expensive, time consuming, and hard to organise. As an alternative to real world training, training based on simulation enables learning to be performed in a flexible manner, and makes frequent repetition exercises accessible and affordable. The STRESS project explores to what extent simulation-based training can be used to improve the communicative skills of professionals in situations where they have to interact with verbally aggressive individuals. Specific case studies are conducted for two domains: public safety and public transport. In this talk, I will give an overview of the project’s aims and the results obtained so far.
