Title : The Big Ideas in Computing

Presenter Frank van Harmelen
Abstract Amsterdam University College (a broad bachelor degree combining science, the humanities and social sciences) has asked us to teach a course on computing for non-scientists. The working title of the course is The Big Ideas in Computing. Together with Hajo Reijers and Ellen Maassen I have made a design of the course, and I have been generously given the full 1 hour slot of the WAI to try it out on you. What do you think are the "big ideas in computing"? Have we made the right selection of ideas? Are we explaining them in the right way? And can these ideas even be tought to people outside Informatics? Please bring your own list of "Big Ideas in Computing"[*] [*] For inspiration, see Big Ideas in Physics <http://www.dummies.com/how-to/content/10-important-ideas-in-physics.html>
